2/7/2024 - We recieved the following request by email, and have been asked to post it here:
Message: To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Corey Burrell. I am a railfan who is deaf with a hearing aid and
cochlear implant from New Hampshire. I hope that all is well with you. Ever since my childhood have always loved trains, especially railroad equipment from the transition era (1930-1970s) of
railroading. Trains have always been such an important aspect of my childhood that I recall so fondly. I recall from when I was three years old my parents would always take me up to the White
Mountains to ride the Conway Scenic Railroad. I do have some memories of riding The Plymouth & Lincoln Railroad (Hobo Railroad) from my childhood as well. Truthfully most of the very positive
memories come from riding the Conway Scenic Railroad during my childhood. I've always loved visiting North Conway, it is truly such a beautiful part of my state. There's really no other part of
my state that I'd rather visit on a frequent basis then North Conway. I wish I could visit their more often then I normally do. When I was in 1st-3rd grade my parents owned a house in a rural
area at the time, and we lived literally within a few minutes walking distance from train tracks. We had a local tourist railroad called "Wilton Scenic Railroad", which ran a pair of RDC-2s on
the Hillsboro branch that would pass by our house on a daily basis. I remember always running up to the train tracks would ever I would hear the RDCs K5LA horn. I cannot say how fondly I recall
those memories, especially when my childhood was largely overshadowed from being constantly bullied by my peers at school.
I also enjoyed model railroading as well during my early childhood.
Unfortunately, I never really had any quality train set during my childhood. I was supposed to inherit my Grandfather's New York Central Train set, sadly that never happened. Growing up, I've
always wanted an O-scale "The Polar Express" train set, but that has always been out of me and my family's budget. Despite that, I had the joy of watching TV programs related to model railroads
like "I Love Toy Trains" as a child.
For as long as I could remember, I've always wanted to work for a heritage or
Class III railroad. When I was a junior in high school, that was when I tried to focus on that goal. Unfortunately, I have had a lot of issues with getting other railroad workers to understand
how my hearing loss works. What many railroad workers don't seem to understand is that my hearing aid and cochlear implant both work very well for me. I can pretty much hold a normal conversation
and hear through the radio like the average individual. Many have argued about the devices malfunctioning which is really a poor comeback as that has never happened to me ever. But the
counterargument to that is that I can always bring backup devices and batteries. Thankfully this is really a non-issue for me with railroads thanks to Mlsner V. Union Pacific. But a railroad can
easily not consider my application to avoid having to provide accommodations or legal issues before getting to the point of being employed. However, not only am I deaf, but I am also
neurodivergent as well. Unfortunately their is a stigma for people who are neurodivergent among railroad workers and the railroad community, that has been honestly the larger factor of me
obtaining a brakeman/trainman position on a Heritage/Class III railroad. What many misconception that railroad workers have is that every person who is neurodivergent is mentally challenged and
wouldn't be able to comprehend the rules and regulations that the railroad sets which is not true. I'm 27 years old now, and I am still struggling to gain employment with a Heritage/Class III
railroad. It has been in my experience that people like myself are constantly denied the opportunity to earn a livable wage, and that has been extremely difficult for me in terms of trying to
live a decent quality of life.
I know that in light of the current perception towards those with my set of
differences within the railroad community that it would be next to impossible to find any brakeman/trainman opportunities with the railroad. Despite that, it has always been my dream ever since I
was very little to become a railroad engineer. I've always wanted to have the opportunity to be able to handle a locomotive. I know that at this point, that opportunity won't be provided to me as
an employee of the railroad. I have decided to do a GoFundMe campaign dedicated to bringing my childhood dream to life. The Monticello Railway Museum provides the opportunity to allow individuals
to operate their locomotives for a combined 40 minutes. The reason why I like MRM's throttle time program is because they actually let individuals experience what it's like to run a train and the
use of the automatic brakes, as opposed to other programs that just use the independent brakes. MRM also has an EMD F7. I have always loved F-Units and similar units with that carbody. It has
always been my dream to have the opportunity to run an F-unit or a locomotive of similar carbody.
In conclusion, I'm reaching out to other Model Railroad related shops and
clubs as I am hoping that they would most likely be the most empathetic towards my cause. I was wondering if you would be open to supporting me by sharing my fundraiser on your social media
pages? This really is a once in a lifetime educational opportunity for me. It's also a fantastic opportunity for me to make a happy memory that would last me for a lifetime. I really don't have
much of a following at all within the railfan community. I would truly appreciate any exposure for my GoFundMe that your organization could provide for me. I really hope that one day that there
will be more diverse opportunities for people like myself to earn a livable wage and to achieve their desired career profession. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and what I am trying
to accomplish. If you are open to supporting my cause, I'd be more then happy to share my GoFundMe page with you. Thank you for taking the time to read my message. I hope to hear back from you
soon.
Kind Regards,
Corey Burrell
